The Soul of the Soil: Honouring Helichrysum in Skin + Spirit Care

Helichrysum, also known locally as Impepho, is one of South Africa’s most valued indigenous plants. Traditionally used for cleansing and protection, it’s also gaining recognition in natural skincare for its impressive therapeutic properties.

At Manna & Me, we include Helichrysum in our formulations not only because of its historical and cultural significance, but because it truly delivers—especially for sensitive and reactive skin.

What Makes Helichrysum Special?

Helichrysum belongs to a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family. In South Africa, species like Helichrysum odoratissimum and Helichrysum petiolare have long been used in traditional practices for their antimicrobial and calming properties. The dried flowers are commonly used for incense, and infusions are applied to the skin to soothe irritation.

We work with this plant in a way that’s aligned with both its traditional significance and its proven benefits for skin health.

We believe skincare can be more than routine. It can be ritual.
By including Helichrysum in our formulations, we weave together beauty, ancestry, and everyday healing.

Skincare Benefits of Helichrysum:

  • Calms inflammation: Ideal for eczema, redness, or irritated skin

  • Supports healing: Known to help with minor wounds, scars, and skin recovery

  • Antibacterial & antifungal: Gently protects without harsh effects

  • Restores balance: Soothes dryness and sensitivity, especially during seasonal transitions

Multi-Purpose Balm
Formulated for sensitive skin, this healing balm includes Helichrysum alongside cocoa butter, castor oil, and vitamin E. It works as a lip balm, barrier balm, or as targeted support for dry, itchy patches.
