How to Grow Marigolds from Seed: Colour, Care & Connection to Wellness
In this guide, you’ll learn how to grow marigolds from seed, why they matter in your garden and your wellness routine, and how they fit into the values that shape our products and philosophy.
Growing Marigolds from Seed: Simple Steps
What You’ll Need:
- Marigold seeds (available here)
- Seed trays or small pots
- Light, well-draining soil
- Water & sunlight
- Optional: compost, labels, mulch
Step 1: Start Indoors (4–6 Weeks Before Last Frost)
- Fill trays with moist seed-starting mix.
- Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Cover lightly and mist.
- Keep warm (20–25°C) and place in a sunny spot.
Seedlings appear within a week—fast-growing and full of promise!
Step 2: Transplant
Once seedlings are 5–7 cm tall:
- Harden them off by placing outside for a few hours daily over a week.
- Transplant to garden beds or pots, spaced 20–30 cm apart.
Step 3: Care & Bloom
- Full sun = more blooms.
- Water regularly but avoid soggy soil.
- Deadhead faded flowers to encourage new ones.
Why We Love Marigolds
Marigolds are vibrant, grounding, and surprisingly practical. Here’s how they support our pillars:
Indigenous Wisdom & Local Ingredients
While Tagetes (African/French marigolds) brighten the garden, their cousin Calendula officinalis—also known as pot marigold—is a key ingredient in our skincare and tea blends. Known for its skin-soothing, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties, calendula has been used in traditional remedies for centuries.
We use locally sourced or garden-grown calendula wherever possible, celebrating the healing power of this golden flower in face oils, balms, and calming herbal blends.
Wellness & Self-Care
Growing marigolds isn’t just about pretty flowers. It's a mindful, nurturing practice. Watching something grow from seed into bloom can ground your day, reduce stress, and reconnect you to the rhythms of nature. And when you use calendula-based skincare or sip a calendula tea, you're continuing that care—from soil to skin to soul.
Sustainability & Upcycling
Marigolds are pollinator-friendly and naturally repel pests like aphids and nematodes, reducing the need for chemicals in the garden. We save seeds from each season, and you can too—zero waste, maximum beauty. Plus, we compost marigold trimmings and spent blooms in our skincare garden, closing the loop from growth to regeneration.
